Agents

Custom Agent

A ready-made AI persona with its own instructions and tools, picked from a menu, like choosing a specialist.

Definition

A VS Code chat persona defined in an .agent.md file (formerly called a chat mode) that bundles instructions, a tool list, and optionally a model. Custom agents are selected from the Agent dropdown in the Chat view rather than @-mentioned.

Example

A planner.agent.md limited to read-only tools drafts implementation plans but can never edit files.
